MHS Students Discuss Election Coverage and Media at SXSWedu

Three Manor High School students enrolled in the Advanced Audio/Video Production class had the distinct opportunity on Tuesday to participate in a panel discussion at the SXSWedu Conference.

MHS students Juan Rodriguez, Grant Loveless, and Agojok Madio joined their teacher, Rakeda Ervin as well as other Journalism and Audio/Video Production students and teachers from Pflugerville High School and Cedar Ridge High School in a panel discussion titled “Secrets Revealed! How to Break the Fake News Cycle.” The discussion was moderated by Leah Clapman, Managing Editor for PBS Newshour.

An audience of over one hundred conference attendees were present. Student journalists and educators joined in an informal conversation about how kids experienced news this election, how they consume information and how learning to produce news videos has made them better able to navigate our increasingly complicated and treacherous information landscape.

The MHS Audio/Video Production students have been engaged since 2014 in Student Reporting Labs, a partnership between PBS Newshour and high schools that gives students the opportunity to produce content for PBS Newshour on topics that impact their lives.
